What Is Microsoft Clarity Consent API?

Microsoft Clarity Consent API is a mechanism that allows websites to communicate a visitor’s cookie and tracking preferences directly to Microsoft Clarity. It helps ensure that Clarity respects the consent choices collected through a cookie banner or Consent Management Platform (CMP).

Since October 31, 2025, Microsoft requires valid consent signals for Clarity traffic originating from the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom and Switzerland to enable its full cookie-based functionality.

Microsoft currently recommends ConsentV2, which separately manages analytics_Storage and ad_Storage permissions. When consent is granted, Clarity can use cookies and maintain analytics sessions across pages. When consent is denied, Clarity operates in a limited no-consent mode without setting Clarity cookies, which can affect features such as session recordings, heatmaps and funnel analysis.

The Consent API can support consent management requirements under frameworks such as the GDPR, ePrivacy rules and UK privacy regulations, but implementing the API alone does not guarantee legal compliance. Websites must still provide appropriate information, collect consent where legally required and allow users to withdraw or change their choices.
