How does Microsoft Clarity consentV2 affect tracking in the EEA and UK?

Microsoft Clarity ConsentV2 changes its tracking behavior according to the consent status communicated by the website. Since October 31, 2025, Microsoft requires a valid consent signal to enable full Clarity functionality for visitors from the EEA, UK, and Switzerland.

When the relevant analytics and advertising storage permissions are granted, Clarity can use first-party and third-party cookies and connect activity across pages and sessions.

If consent is denied, Clarity switches to a more limited tracking mode:

• It does not place Clarity tracking cookies.

• It operates in no-consent mode.

• Each page view receives a separate identifier instead of being linked through a persistent session.

• Activity is not maintained as continuous session-level tracking across visits.

This restricted behavior continues until Clarity receives an updated consent signal allowing the relevant storage purposes.

A consent management platform (CMP) can capture the visitor’s decision and communicate the corresponding ConsentV2 status to Clarity.

ConsentV2 controls how Clarity responds to a user’s choice, but using the API correctly does not automatically make a website compliant. The overall implementation must still meet the privacy and consent requirements that apply to the website and its users.
