How do CMPs detect and block trackers?

A consent management platform (CMP) can identify tracking technologies by scanning website pages and examining cookies, scripts, pixels, iframes, local storage, and network requests.

A typical CMP workflow includes:

  • Scanning: Crawling website pages to identify storage technologies and tracking resources.

  • Identification: Matching detected technologies and domains with known services and tracking patterns.

  • Classification: Assigning technologies to categories such as necessary, analytics, advertising, or personalization.

  • Prior blocking: Preventing configured consent-dependent scripts or tags from running until the required choice is given.

  • Rescanning: Checking the website again to identify technologies introduced through plugins, tags, embeds, or other changes.

Automated scanning has limitations. Trackers triggered only after login, user interaction, geographic conditions, A/B tests, or server-side events may not appear in every scan. Regular testing and configuration reviews are therefore still important.
