Do I need a privacy policy on my website?

You will usually need a privacy policy if your website processes personal information and is subject to privacy or disclosure requirements. Check whether your site:

  • Collects names, email addresses, or messages through forms.

  • Offers accounts, purchases, bookings, or subscriptions.

  • Uses analytics, advertising pixels, or third-party embeds.

  • Processes visitor information through hosting, security, or other connected services.

Whether a policy is required depends on factors such as your business location, the people or markets you serve, the types of information you process, and the laws that apply to your activities. Contractual or platform requirements may also require specific privacy disclosures. For example, Google Analytics requires users to provide certain disclosures about their use of Analytics and how data is collected and processed.

A website cookie scan can help identify cookies and some tracking technologies, but it will not reveal every data flow. Review forms, server-side processing, hosting and security services, analytics, advertising tools, and other connected services before deciding what your privacy policy needs to cover.

Publishing a privacy policy does not by itself make your data practices compliant. The policy should accurately reflect how your website and organization actually process personal information.
