How to check Google Consent Mode v2?

Use Google Tag Assistant to inspect your website’s consent defaults and confirm that they update when a visitor interacts with the cookie banner.

  1. Start with cleared consent preferences, connect Tag Assistant to your website, and open the page.

  2. Select the earliest Consent event. Inspect the API Call details or the Consent tab’s On-page Default column.

  3. Confirm the values of ad_storage, analytics_storage, ad_user_data, and ad_personalization.

  4. Interact with the banner, then inspect the latest Consent event and its updated values.

For a setup that requires prior consent for all four purposes, expect the following:

Visitor choice

Expected consent values

No choice yet

All four remain denied.

Accepts all four purposes

All four become granted.

Rejects all optional purposes

All four remain denied.

Accepts analytics only

analytics_storage becomes granted; the three advertising signals remain denied.

Defaults must precede measurement commands, and updates must match the actual permissions collected.

In Basic Consent Mode, Tag Assistant may connect only after consent because Google tags are initially blocked. A visible banner alone does not prove correct implementation. Neither does a gcd network parameter: Google sends it even when Consent Mode is inactive.
