Does Google Consent Mode v2 make a website GDPR compliant?

No. Google Consent Mode v2 communicates consent choices and adjusts supported tag behavior. It does not establish a lawful basis for processing or make an entire website GDPR compliant.

Your responsibilities still include:

  • Obtaining valid consent where required and making withdrawal easy.

  • Explaining data purposes, recipients, and retention through clear privacy information.

  • Limiting collection and storage to what is necessary.

  • Protecting personal data and handling individuals’ rights requests.

  • Assessing service-provider arrangements and international transfers where relevant.

The EDPB’s guidance on lawful processing explains the conditions for valid consent.

Consent Mode can support website privacy compliance, but neither a working banner nor cookieless measurement automatically satisfies every applicable requirement. Google’s product policies and your legal obligations must both be addressed.
