What Is a Consent Preference Cookie?
A consent preference cookie remembers the choices a visitor makes in a cookie banner or preference centre. It can record accepted or rejected categories, or store an identifier connected to those choices.
For example, a visitor may allow analytics but reject advertising. On the next page, the website reads the saved preference and should continue respecting that combination instead of asking again or treating the visitor as having accepted everything.
Three separate functions are involved:
Remembering the choice: storing the visitor’s preference.
Applying the choice: allowing or blocking the relevant scripts and technologies.
Keeping evidence: retaining appropriate consent records where needed.
A cookie consent management platform can coordinate these functions, but the preference cookie alone does not perform all three.
If it expires or is deleted, the website may no longer recognize the saved choice. Its duration should suit the circumstances, and visitors should be able to change or withdraw their cookie consent. New purposes may require a fresh choice even before the cookie expires.
