A cookie banner is an on-screen notice that explains how a website uses cookies and similar technologies. When permission is required, it lets visitors accept, reject or customise those uses before the relevant tracking starts.

It usually appears on a visitor’s first visit and links to more detailed information. The website can remember the choice, while keeping cookie settings accessible so visitors can change their preferences later.

A cookie consent banner must control the technologies it describes. A message stating “By continuing to browse, you accept cookies” does not establish valid consent under EU cookie rules.
