CCPA and CPRA
What is Global Privacy Control (GPC)?
Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a browser-based privacy signal that allows users to automatically request that businesses do not sell or share their personal information. It can be enabled through a supported browser setting or browser extension.
Once enabled, GPC sends the user’s preference to each website they visit. This removes the need to find and submit a separate “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” request on every website.
Under the CCPA, covered businesses that sell or share personal information must recognise and process GPC as a valid opt-out preference signal. This includes sharing personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
GPC:
communicates an automatic sale and sharing opt-out;
is sent through the user’s browser or extension;
businesses should not require users to submit a separate manual opt-out request after receiving a valid GPC signal
helps businesses apply privacy preferences to cookies, advertising technologies and other data-sharing activities.
GPC does not request the deletion of personal information or block all data collection. It specifically communicates that the user does not want their personal information sold or shared. Other rights, such as deletion or correction, must be exercised separately.
