What is data privacy?

Data privacy is the responsible management of personal information, including how it is collected, used, stored, shared and deleted. It helps ensure that organisations only process data for clear and appropriate purposes.

It also gives individuals greater control over their information, such as knowing what data is collected and requesting access, correction or deletion where applicable. Data privacy is different from data security: security protects information from unauthorised access, while privacy determines whether and how that information should be used.
